Path-to-Portugal Booklist
Feed your brain and fuel your dream.
Welcome to part of my personal Portugal library! I started buying books on Portugal as part of my 2002 dream to move here. I came for the first time in 1997 and knew almost nothing about Portugal except what I read in my guide book. I fell in love with the country and wanted to learn all I could about it.
At that time, it was difficult to find books about Portugal in bookstores, let alone in English. I bought anything and everything I could find and read them all.
This list is a fraction of my library. It includes books on politics, history, notable individuals, food, culture; by Portuguese authors; on world events that had an impact on Portugal or where it had a relevant role; and accounts of those who journeyed to or through Portugal.
Most of this list is non-fiction -- my preference. These words have become valuable tools. Asking about food is an easy way to spark a chat with any Portuguese. But a thoughtful and well-intentioned question about their history opens the conversation floodgates. Hours pass and you often end up with a fast friend.
Most of these books can be purchased on Amazon (for Kindle) and/or Audible. Click the yellow button to purchase for your own library. A few books are out-of-print but can still be found for purchase online or by scavenging Portugal's many outdoor book fairs and markets. Books marked with an asterisk (*) are my special favorites.
Enjoy!
